Based out of England – an excellent website and group:
Haunted North America Investigations is an idea brought forth in 2008 by Craig and Julie Mitton with any ideas and input put forth by many others including our partner, Alicia Birell. It is the fruition of many years of ongoing planning and will, with the continuing hard work from our representatives, eventually become a worldwide paranormal travel agency. We have partners in the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States.
At the present time we are concentrating primarily on this website. Courses in developing your psychic and investigating abilities are available as well as investigations of your home or business if you live in Southwestern or Central Ontario are also offered.
There are many abandoned and closed hospitals for the mentally ill (lunatic asylums) listed in many of the areas. In an effort to understand why so many are rife with paranormal activity we have done some research on them as a general topic. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries when most most of these hospitals were fully operational the following treatments and conditions were commonly found: electroshock treatment, insulin shock treatments, cold water treatment. lobotomies (ice pick therapy), torture, beatings, sexual assault, poor or no sanitation, poor lighting and heat, little or no furniture, optional clothing and yes, murder. This was not just patient against patient violence (although that was very common) but also staff treatment of patients.
The following is a short list of what could get you institutionalized: Laziness, Egotism, Disappointed Love, Women (yes just for actually being female), Female Disease, Mental Excitement, Cold, Snuff, Greediness, Imaginary Female Trouble, Gathering in the Head, Exposure and Quackery, Jealousy and Religion, Asthma and Bad Habits, Political Excitement and Masturbation. You can see why overcrowding became such a issue; its a wonder not everyone was hospitalized.
I received a letter from a former patient of Central State Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA and it has opened my eyes a lot to the human equation of these, well basically Hell houses, they called hospitals and the inhumane treatment people suffered in such places. His personal experiences were at Central State Hospital but I’m quite sure his thoughts mirror how others feel about what happened to them in other institutions.
I am posting his thoughts in hopes more eyes will be opened as mine have. His name has been omitted in order to protect his right to privacy.
“All of the trespassers of these places need to be more careful of whose law they are trespassing against. Spiritual or physical.
I watch these videos and I remember things that are sad not scary.
Look you all, you are illegally trespassing and possibly disturbing a miserable sacred ground of long forgotten souls, that were forgotten by any one that loved them long before they arrived here. I received electric shock therapy here twice illegally in 1979. when I was there all you can hear were muffled moans and see smug orderlies with the power of day and night for everyone there. Give this place a rest. Someone tear down the hall of tears please.
It is interesting that people look for the other side, and probably inevitable that one would want to know what waits for them there. But the places of violence and misery may have outcomes unsavory for both the physical and spiritual .A reasoning voice of understanding is what most people need who have not experienced the troubles these institutions provided…perhaps you will expand and let the voices mingle from both sides of the spectrum…”
The information on this website is only partially based on personal experiences of certain team members. The rest of the information is gathered from research from many different websites and other sources. We have collected information about reported hauntings, paranormal activity, personal reports and local legends; but in locations not personally visited by a member(s) of the team we can in no way validate that the hauntings described in the entries are valid and/or still occurring in modern times.
We here at Haunted North America do not claim any responsibility for any actions of anyone who enters a site we have described on this website. We are merely providing a geographical reference to locations rumored to be haunted in North America. We certainly do NOT endorse trespassing; so wherever you explore and whatever you do there is your own responsibility.
Obviously the main objective of this site is provide information for people wanting to do their own paranormal investigations at reportedly haunted locations. A secondary objective is to provide information on some of the historically important buildings and sites in North America. A lot of these sites are in serious need of renovations and care. Please get involved in societies in your local area that are working to save these essential parts of our history; we have lost so many already.
